Education in architecture and urban planning is continuously being reformed due to the tremendous plurality of possibilities; commonly it is based on specific expertise of the tutors behind it and their individual approaches. While witnessing the current tendency towards specialisation of different disciplines / courses, we nevertheless tend to not react to evident - and immense gaps - remaining in between. At the same time, another important-to-understand tendency has emerged, that for interconnected and interdisciplinary work within the society.

Transformations of vast quantities of vacant space from the Super Dutch era became one of the most important endeavor in architecture production. Diy initiatives and decisions made under-up are examined as the new-old  framework which we should all target again. Top down is rightfully challenged for not being relevant nor efficient in spatial production.  In this concern, claiming the right to the city became a new mantra for young architects and professionals - victims of the mistakes made in the past. The right to the city is reinforced with new tendencies in reconstructing the city ownership - But, let us be honest, we do not own the city. For many reasons, we can all witness ever high polarization in decision making processes.
What can we do?

Workshops
Targeting DIY tendencies in architectural and urban research and production, workshops are conceived as half-day, intensive, cross-disciplinary, discussion-based modes, resulting in emancipatory proposals for urban (re)vitalisation that will be followed by public debates about creative approaches to urbanity in new circumstances.

Agniesebuurt STREET.SCAPES:LAB (AgSS:L) is an open-air series of events  in Agniesebuurt Area in Rotterdam Noord, aimed at promoting collective usage of public space through occupying models and general public engagement. Groups of students will produce interventions with guidance of - Yasemin Sengil (SHAPESHIFT Rotterdam), UNKNOWN Rotterdam, Post Office,Piet Vollaard ,Stealth, Milena Ivković &Blok74., joined with young practitioners and interns from many offices for the Community (vs.) Practice wrap up workshop.

Architectural Walks
Students will visit, analyse and collect data for around 40 sites in 5 cities (De Uithof Masterplan; Java, Borneo and KNSM area; Almere Masterplan, etc.) as well as numerous offices and studios (Domain, MVRDV, KAAN, OMA, Zus, De Urbanisten, Space & Matter, ..). These learning itineraries will enable students to critically review the previously mapped and researched content and to discuss topics and questions posed through the first phase in situ - with local designers, planners, researchers joined by SCAPES.LAB network tutors.

Post production phase includes setting up a digital database of all collected materials and  encouraging students to produce individual responses and critical conclusions in the form of essays, diaries, storyboard sheets, case studies and other media (video, audio works etc.). Final outcome will be published in a FLAT.SCAPES:LAB 4.0 book-map-blog-a-azine, available to everyone, in September 2014 and presented in seven cities in the Balkan (Novi Sad, Belgrade, Skopje, Podgorica, Niš, Sarajevo and Banja Luka). As a follow-up, we look forward to the production of several events together with NL collaborators in October 2014. as a way of strenghtening the capacities build through the FLAT.SCAPES:LAB 4.0

FLAT.SCAPES:LAB 4.0 is a part of SCAPES:LAB initiative, aimed at defining and producing independent knowledge-transfer platform that would reposition needs in architectural and urban education/realities today. Methodologically, the initiative advocates open collective educational structures - DIY Education modes where self-organized research groups facilitate networked production, exchange and distribution of knowledge. Platform´s core group are architecture/urbanism students from Balkan region (Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina).

SCAPES:LAB aims to provide a fresh and innovative answer to an urgently needed reposition of architectural education. We believe that the permanent state of crisis in the Balkan region period can initiate and catalyze the production of new forms and formats for research. Forthright data collecting, working, discussing and exchange with some of the most relevant authors, projects, concepts, initiatives, schools and phenomena within professional content today build a valuable contribution for critical reflections on the gaps between praxis and formal academic bodies.

WHO_?
SCAPES:LAB is co-initiated by IDnet and Center of Architecture, Serbia with the support by six Faculties from four countries and participating students of architecture from Novi Sad, Niš and Belgrade / Serbia, Podgorica / Montenegro, Skopje / Macedonia and Sarajevo & Banja Luka / Bosnia and Herzegovina.
*These countries have similar background, all from the Balkans region (ex Yugoslavia); non- EU countries in Europe; at the moment in the final years of integration process. This process coincides with the transition of economy, politics and education paradigms.

WHY_?
Integration process to EU that came after conflicts period brought with itself large changes in all the parameters; including both creative work and educational output. Relevant phenomena are being explored in the inaccurate and poor environment. While EU continuously reflect upon itself, non-EU, Ex Yugoslavian countries are looking forward their place in generating strategies. Unreachable communication brings high content mystification. Confusion arises.

WHAT_?
The core idea of SCAPES:LAB initiative is to both define&produce independent knowledge-transfer platform that addresses the way-finding reposition need in Architecture and Urban education/realities nowadays.
In this concern, several platforms were formed with the very same idea: to examine alternatives to the hierarchical models. Knowledge production is managed and using innovative potentials through networked readings of cities & policies, direct collaboration within the professional field, colleagues and institutions, a rich variety of studios (large and small) and other similar initiatives; looking forward to establishing a networked structure able to shift its focus toward actualities - reinforced with innovative trans-national background.
SCAPES:LAB research is concerned with the impacts of politics, economy and society in general on architectural/urban reality and vice versa.

HOW_?
We believe that the continuity of discontinuity and the permanent state of (re)construction in the Balkan region can initiate and catalyze the production of new forms and formats for research.
Methodologically, SCAPES:LAB advocates open collective educational structures - DIY Education modes where self-organized research groups facilitate networked production, exchange and distribution of knowledge. Core group structure are the students of Architecture/Urbanism and familiar disciplines, coming from the transitional realities in the Balkan region (Novi Sad, Belgrade and Niš / Serbia, Skopje / Macedonia, Podgorica / Montenegro and Sarajevo, Banja Luka / Bosnia and Herzegovina.
SCAPES:LAB expands the field of studying margins on the behalf of post-socialist Balkan region and insists on developing critical outlook among its participants; acting as a laboratory able to define, educate, engage and create.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE_?
SCAPES:LAB is initially framed as a way to synchronize capacities strength built through five years of intense production in SCAPES separate programs/territories; FRearCH / 2013 in France and Confederatio Helvetica / Switzerland, EScapes / 2012 in Spain, FLATscapes 01, 02 and 03  / 2009-2011 in The Netherlands. From 2009 - 2014, more than 900 students of architecture had chance to collaborate and examine contemporary practice through our programs.
